Gap payments
A "gap payment" is charged by some consultants to make up for the insurers' freeze in the rate of the remuneration they make for their clients, this freeze was introduced in the early 1990s. However, over the last few years, several insurers have further reduced the cover to their clients leaving a shortfall, even to this 1990 price. In order to give patients a clear and consistent billing structure, so they can be confident from the start what their care will cost, Mr Standley now charges the Nuffield Hospital's "self-pay" rate whether you are insured or not. If you are concerned your insurer may not cover the full cost of your care, then please feel free to contact us for further advice.
With the recent restrictions in the NHS many people now act to ensure they will see a consultant who specialises in their problem, so The Exeter Hand Clinic also welcomes those not covered by insurance. Coming to the Exeter Hand Clinic will give you a speedy diagnosis and full explanation by a specialist, with many conditions being treated immediately in the clinic, but we feel it only fair to stress that being seen privately gives no priority into the NHS system.
